Etoile de Bordeaux

Etoile de Bordeaux

Inspired by a photograph I took of the inlaid floor at La Maison de Vin, in Bordeaux, France. When I began to draft the compass on huge sheets of freezer paper, I discovered that it had only 7 points, rather than the usual 8 or 12. This meant I became familiar with the protractor, and weird numbers for the angles to make the points fit. The background spaces between the points are string/crazy pieced using a variety of beige prints. The bottom border is string pieced using the dark fabrics. The other three borders contain small versions of the big compass. Machine quilted to outline all seams; hand quilted feather scroll which didn’t show up in the background fabric so I stuffed each feather, from the back.
